The International Reading Association has set out the following charges for the European Committee IDEC and its other regional development committees:

• Work with the International Development Coordinating Committee to achieve its charges and goals
• Explore and facilitate the promotion of literacy and International Reading Association membership in Europe
• Plan and implement strategies for promoting local and Association membership, through an emphasis on professional development
• Report activities to the International Development Coordinating Committee and to the IRA board liaison
• Work collaboratively with the Director of International Development in the identification of and/or support of professional development projects in the region.

IDEC and its individual members have been actively engaged in developing the international dimension of the IRA and have also contributed at all levels to the ongoing discussion about the structure of IRA.
