Why visit Dublin, Ireland?

The 22nd European Conference on Literacy is taking place in Dublin, Ireland. Known for its long literary tradition, its culture, and its friendly welcome, the city promises to be an exciting venue for both conference activities and further excursions. If you haven’t visited Ireland before, Dublin is an ideal base for exploring the country’s cultural, historical and natural attractions.

Culture and History

The cultural scene in Dublin attracts visitors from every corner of the world. Several renowned national cultural venues, including the National Gallery, and the recently established Museum of Literature Ireland are located close to the city centre and the conference venue.The country’s rich theatrical tradition is show-cased in a number of lauded city-centre venues  including the Gaiety and the Abbey Theatre. Large venues such as the 3 Arena and the Bord Gáis Energy theatre host international artists and shows. The city is also home to the National Concert Hall.

Dublin is a city steeped in historical significance. Some of the most popular historical attractions for visitors to Dublin include EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, the Book of Kells exhibition at Trinity College and the National Museum of Ireland. A stroll through the streets of Dublin will bring you to noted landmarks such as Dublin Castle and Christchurch Cathedral.

The city, and indeed the country as a whole, has gained an international reputation for its eateries. A wide array of options will be open to conference attendees to choose to explore the wider city. Dublin is home to several Michelin-starred restaurants and has also developed a significant café culture in recent years. Dublin is renowned for its vibrant nightlife and atmosphere. Temple Bar is a popular destination for visitors who wish to experience Dublin’s night life, but there are many other locations where conference-goers can experience a traditional Irish music session and the Irish pub atmosphere. For those who are interested in a deeper dive into the tradition of brewery in Dublin, the Guinness Storehouse and Jameson Distillery offer experiential tours that have become top visitor attractions in the city.

Howth

Out and about

For visitors hoping to experience the outdoors, Dublin will not leave them wanting. Located on the River Liffey, Dublin is a coastal city that home is to many picturesque beaches, hills and trails. Not far from the conference venue, visitors can experience a hike around the Howth Cliff Walk, a walk on the seafront at Clontarf, or a stroll through the grounds of Malahide Castle. Dublin is also home to several award-winning golf courses.

Dublin as a base for exploring Ireland

As the capital city of Ireland, Dublin is well connected to other popular tourist locations by both rail and bus links. The following destinations are within a 2-3 hour jaunt from the city, by car or by public transport:
